You've lost everything and hit rock bottom. You've watched friends and family die. You think you have it hard, grinding your life away at two piece of shit jobs that you won't quit because this is it for opportunities in your area. You think you've fucked up in the most fucked up of ways. You think it can't possibly get any worse than it is now.
...then you walk by a makeshift cot made of cardboard picked out of a dumpster covered with birdshit, with a garbage bag full of air and clothes at the curb, laid out in a space originally made for cars. A bed. This is someone's bed.
And it's about to rain. This person's bed is about to be soaked out.
So you go to your air-conditioned shitty job, then commute in a giant, safe, dry, air-conditioned shitty bus, then ride your shitty bike back to your shitty, safe, dry, comfortable, electrified, internet accessed, indoor plummed rental room while whoever made that bed in the parking lot gets to sleep on rainy birdshit and a soggy bag full of their own clothes.
Then you have to reconsider the usage of the word 'shitty', because you clearly don't know what the fuck an actual, real shitty life means for those who must live it.
Life isn't as bad as it seems. Not if your can read this on an internet-connected device you own. This is not meant to say you aren't struggling if your struggles haven't rendered you broken and pennyless. It is meant to say that as you struggle to reach the top of the mountain with whatever weight you're carrying on your back, don't forget others who must make the same trip with ten times the weight. Don't forget those who's unlucky draws at the game of life left them crushed at the bottom of the mountain with no way at all to get back up. Count your blessings, fellow oppos. They are more numerous than you might be willing to admit.

Just look at the Palestinian civilians, Iraqis trapped by ISIS, Nigerians starving to death and their environment being destroyed by oil companies, etc. We have it good.

Well said. If we all quit being selfish, and really look around at things we see everyday we would realize each and every one of us should be thankful for what we DO have. More important than shelter is food. If you had 3 meals today you're already living a better life than hundreds of millions of other people.

We should be thankful that we can actually visit Oppo and talk about our cars. There are many people that can't even dream of what it would be like to do anything more than walking.

I can honestly say I've had a rough life, spending most of my child hood with little to no money to eat or have anything really nice, spend some days with no food, but I always had a roof over my head, I always had some place to be and not sit in the rain cold and wet.
I have always been grateful that my mom did what she could up until the day she passed away. I watched her die when I was 15 years old, Hell I had to make the decision on whether she was to be taken off life support or not.
Even in that moment I knew that someone had it harder.
I give as much as I can to others, I can remember seeing a homeless man in my town, I was skipping school one morning and was kinda bored, so I took him to sub way, got him two foot long subs, he was very grateful of that.
Giving to others, the less fortunate is always a good feeling. no matter how low your life may seem, someone has it worse. Give to them and it lifts yourself up.

Excellent post. I think about this every day. I grew up poor, but there were always people worse off than myself. I usually say when someone asks how's my day " I can't complain." Honestly I can't, don't have the right to. Wouldn't be right to with people REALLY suffering in this world.

I've been the guy with the shitty job and the shitty car and the shitty room.
I've also been the guy on the curb, sleeping under stairwells and in abandoned cars in the woods.
I've never felt like I've hit rock bottom. I've always had something to lift me up from utter ruin, even if it was just the intact sanctity of my own mind. I may not believe in blessings, but I do believe in the power of human perseverance. Sadly, I needed life to get worse before I understood that even my worst was still better than the best given to some. And I've been thankful for that lesson ever since.

I havent been homeless, but I agree, I have never felt like I hit rock bottom, every down ward turn is just another chance to demonstrate strength and ability to overcome the bullshit in life.

Very true words.
One thing I want to add - it's futile to focus on what you don't have while thinking that you'll be happier once you get a certain job, car, house, girlfriend/boyfriend, spouse, etc.
It really is true that you have to become happy with yourself regardless of what you do or don't have. Because if you're not then attaining something you've been dreaming of won't give you more than momentary happiness. And when that happens you'll be both bummed out that you wasted so much time being sad while waiting to reach that goal, while also disappointed that the achievement didn't make you happy.
